How to Deal With Mosquitoes Naturally
It's mosquito season again here in North America. This is the time of year when people rely on pesticides for their yards or they use synthetic insect repellants. Many of us are under the false impression that this is the heavy-duty approach and everything else is "not hardcore enough."

Ladies, Are Toxins Closer Than You Think?

Ladies, Are Toxins Closer Than You Think?
We all know that skin covers our whole body—from head to toe. But did you know that skin is an organ? We tend to think of organs as being internal: liver, kidneys, appendix, etc. It is obvious these organs are sensitive and need to be treated with care. Skin, on the other hand, seems protected by its smooth outer layer…but not so fast! While it does have that protective outer layer, that doesn’t keep it from being super absorbent. Think about how quickly a good lotion disappears right into your skin! There are even topical medicinal treatments like hormone creams that use this absorbency to deliver its properties.

Is your sunscreen a danger to your family? A recent study suggests it might be.

Is your sunscreen a danger to your family? A recent study suggests it might be.
A new report released Tuesday by the Environmental Working Group claims that 73% of the 880 sunscreens it tested don't work as well as advertised or contain "worrisome" ingredients.

Almost 3/4ths of the products that were examined were not very effective protection or contained harmful ingredients like oxybenzone, a hormone disruptor, or retinyl palmitate, a form of vitamin A that may harm skin.

3 Steps to a Happy and Healthy Postpartum
The first six weeks after the birth of a child are traditionally considered the postpartum period, when a mother is settling into her new role and bouncing back from pregnancy. But after I had my son, it took my body and mind a lot longer than that to adjust.

Protein

Protein
Protein is one of three macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrates) that the body needs for survival. They are called 'macro' due to the large quantities in which they need to be consumed. Protein is the building block of all our cells and it forms the foundation for our heart, lungs and DNA. It is also one of the most important sources of fuel for the body, replenishing muscles and driving biological processes such as cell growth and metabolism. Protein is composed of amino acids which are organic compounds made of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur.

Invite Healthy Foods to the BBQ

Invite Healthy Foods to the BBQ
Barbecues are commonly known for their indulgence! Pork, chicken, burgers, hot dogs, macaroni salads, and whatever else you can fit on the grill. This is typically coupled with sweet juices or sodas and feel-good desserts. People have them for holidays, birthdays, to spend time with family, or just because the weather’s nice. I’ve even heard of people using their barbecue grill in the winter--in the snow! That smoky flavor is worth the trouble. Although the food tastes amazing, I’ve never been to a bbq and not felt like I needed to be rolled home. I would feel weighed down by all the heavy foods and I might even take a few naps to try to shake the feeling. That made me think, what would a healthier and lighter bbq entail? How can I infuse my beliefs that food should give you energy into a gathering where the foods do the opposite? Is it possible to invite herbs to the bbq without sacrificing flavor or the use of the grill? Let’s find out!

Stress is a killer!  Anxiety causes stress, so it is an important issue to understand and correct. According to the National Centers for Stress Research, 75 to 90% of all visits to healthcare providers are a direct result of stress. When we are anxious or under a great deal of stress, it will usually manifest itself physically.

Calm With Catnip
Catnip is an herbaceous perennial with soft greyish green heart shaped leaves and square stems. It is a member of the mint family and has a flavor that is both sweet and mild. Catnip’s common name derives from its Latin name, Nepeta cataria.  It is curious that its name contains the word cat because it has an affinity for attracting felines of all types.

Endometriosis—What I Wish Someone Had Told Me

treat endo and its symptoms. In the Spring issue I plan to discuss the treatment options many
people have found helpful in some depth. But since some are anxious to explore answers,
here are several things I wish someone had told me early on.

Great Mullein

Great Mullein
Once you’ve seen mullein growing and you know what it looks like you will be able to spot it anywhere. It has velvety, long leaves that form a rosette the first year of growth. The second year it sends up a stalk that grows up to eight feet high with leaves attached and at the top the small yellow flowers bloom and grow. You rarely see one plant. Mullein likes to grow in dry rocky soil in open areas with many other plants for company. If you go back to find the mullein you picked a couple years ago you may not find it because it moved locations on you. It’s a biannual plant so after the second year it dies and leaves a dry stalk. The seeds will be scattered to grow somewhere else.

Understanding The Immune System

Understanding The Immune System
By: Rachel Weaver M.H. (Excerpt from her book, "Be Your Own Doctor")

You need to understand how the immune system works so that you are better prepared to deal with life, health, and illness. The immune system is the body’s safety net. Every day potentially harmful virus, bacteria, and other pathogens enter our bodies.

We are protected from these by our bodies’ marvelous defense system. Understanding the lymphatic system is important to understanding how our immunity works. The lymph system transports lymph, a clear, colorless liquid, to all parts of the body. It resembles the circulatory system because it is composed of a network of lymphatic vessels similar to arteries. Unlike the circulatory system, it has no pump like the heart to keep the lymph flowing.

This is the last resort and what everyone considers the biggest sacrifice.  The truth is, it's not a sacrifice or an extreme. It's delicious and often much more satisfying!

Turmeric Vs Curcumin
Probably, most of you have recognized the flavor of turmeric from Middle Eastern or Indian cuisine. As a spice, it provides curry with its distinctive golden yellow color and flavor. Besides curry, in India, it is widely used in chutney and biryani (aromatic spiced rice) preparations.

In Malaysia and Indonesia, it is used in ‘gulai’ or ‘masak lemak’ (vegetables or fish cooked with coconut milk, onion/shallot, chilies, and turmeric) and to coat fish along with some salt for deep frying. It is an important ingredient in Thai cooking, for instance, used in Musalman curry and red curry. In the West, it is used as a coloring agent in mustard, cheese, and several other products besides being a great addition to soups and stews.

Why do you need a Complete Metal Detox?
Your body can take in toxins easily but is limited to excreting them in small amounts. These toxins can build up in the body over time due to exposure to the toxic environment we live in; unnatural additives in the food we eat, the polluted air we breathe, and even the often-contaminated dirt we walk on.
